Nyungwe Forest National Park has some of Africa’s richest biodiversity. Nyungwe Forest, often compared to Kibale Forest in Uganda, is one of the continent’s oldest green expanses, home to a diverse range of rare and endangered species, including troops of chimps and other primates.

When to go on a Rwanda safari tour to Nyungwe Forest National Park

The Nyungwe Forest National Park is open all year, and chimps are often easier to spot during the wet season. Because it is equatorial rainforest, the trails can become extremely wet and muddy, so bring good shoes and a rain jacket.

Nyamata Church Rwanda Tour.

Nyamata is a small town in Bugesera district, south of Kigali, where many ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus sought refuge in churches shortly after the genocide began on April 7, 1994. Militias killed an estimated 10,000 people in and around the Nyamata Catholic Church grounds between April 14th and 19th, 1994. The church now serves as a memorial to those who died as well as those who have suffered a family tragedy. On display are the deceased’s excavated clothing and skeletal remains, as well as personal stories from survivors.

Walking the streets of Kigali today, it’s difficult to imagine the 100 days of madness in which the Interahamwe slaughtered an estimated one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus in one of history’s most heinous genocides. This center, built near the mass graves of 250,000 victims, attempts to contextualize the event, from the divisive colonial experience in Rwanda and the heinous crimes committed in 1994 to the aftermath of the genocide and the search for justice. The tour concludes with a section on other major massacres around the world.

The steep surrounding hills fall into deep green waters among nearby islands, making this a very picturesque town midway down Lake Kivu’s coast. A few small sandy areas invite you to cool off in the water or launch a kayak to explore the indented shoreline. Akagera National Park

In the northeast of Rwanda, Akagera National Park encompasses 2500 km2 of savannah west of the Kagera River. The Akagera National Park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including over 500 bird species. Elephants and buffalo herds emerge from the forest to drink at the lakes, and you may come across a leopard, a spotted hyena, or even a lion. Giraffe and zebra roam the savannah, and the park is home to over a dozen different types of antelope.
